Abdication

Abdication – this term literally means to give up, to refuse further usage of the power of ruling an organization. For example, the director of a foundation could abdicate from their chair. This could be done due to personal reasons. Or a president of a country could abdicate in order to initiate new elections. Back in ancient times, monarchs used to abdicate voluntarily from their throne. Usually, they have done it in favor of their heirs. Or in situations when their people didn’t support their ruling.

The origin of this legal term is the latin word “abdicatio”. In Roman Law, it was present when inheritor decided not to leave right of inheritance for their son.

Synonyms of “abdication” are “relinquish” and “vacate”.
