Ecclesiastical law – the term is synonymous to Canon Law. It gives the name of a body of church-made law, which binds only those persons which recognize it. Usually, these are only church officers and employees. This branch of Law regulates the activities of Christian organizations. It is based on aged precepts of Canon Law.
In addition, in practice, there are courts in some legal systems which administer canon jurisprudence. These are “religious courts”.
The term origins from the word “Ecclesia” which the ancient Greeks used to refer to their legislative assembly of citizens.
Also in the Latin language, the term ecclesia literally means “church”.
