Punishment – the administrative law and the criminal law define the punishment as a governmental sanction for wrongful act – both established in the local legislation. The punishment for example can be a fine, public work or sentence in prison (depending of the concrete branch of Law and particular jurisdiction). Its role is to punish the offender and on the other side to discipline them so to prevent further wrongful acts. For many punishments in the Criminal Law there is rehabilitation. A synonym is “sanction”.
