Sentence – this legal term finds application in the sphere of Criminal Law, where it refers to the punishment given to a person who has been convicted (i.e. found to be guilty) of a crime. The sentence could be in different forms, depending of the pursued goal – to sanction and to reeducate the wrongdoer – a monetary satisfaction for the damages caused, time in jail, community service, a period of probation, temporary burden for taking particular job position or driving a vehicle, etc. The part of the court process, where the judge decides on what penalty to impose, is named “sentencing phase” or “penal phase”.
