Personal recognizance – this phrase is used in the sphere of Criminal Law. In many legal systems the personal recognizance occurs where a convicted person is arrested but released after convicting him against signing only on regularly basis in the police, as a promise to stay close and appear later in court. The instrument of personal recognizance is different than the personal bond – namely a sum of money, paid as a deposit by the convicted towards the Authorities to grant the future appearance of the convicted in court. A synonym is “own recognizance”(n).
