Plea in bar – within the Criminal Trials in some legal systems, this phrase has two different meanings:

– as a pleading introduced by the defendant in a trial as a complete defense, designed to defeat the action for all time.

– as a pleading stating that this trial can not be moved forward due to concrete processual legal reasons – usually the plea of pardon an the plea of autrefois acquit.
