Prior tempore potior iure

Prior tempore potior iurethis legal maxim comes from Latin. It refers to principle, used in some jurisdictions, stating that older legislation prevail over newer legislation. A synonym is the Latin term “lex posterior” (n). Nowadays the opposite situation usually applies – i.e. the newer legislation prevails over the older one – this is because relations among people change and develop all the time, permanently in time.
