Prosecute

Prosecute – this term is used in the area of Criminal Law. To prosecute means to bring judicial proceedings against a person and to administer them (i.e. to support the conviction) until the conclusion of the court proceedings. This is applicable for physical individuals only, not possible for corporate bodies-they are not subjects of the Criminal Law. A prosecution is done by the prosecutor, who convicts the suspected (i.e. charges him with a crime) where there are enough evidence for the guilt, and takes him/her to court. He has prosecutorial discretion, because can decide to concict or not, to propose the type and length of sentence, to make proposals to the defending attorneys, etc. On the other hand, lawyers are hired by the convicted person to administer the prosecution of criminal charges in the courts. Synonyms are “arraign”, “accuse” and “indict”.
